Counselling Services

“As a counsellor I hear what a person is saying. I never assume I know what is best for my clients. Instead I work collaboratively with my clients so they can get to a point where they are not feeling judged by me, so they are no longer judging themselves.”

Catherine’s counselling practice includes a broad range of areas and she is open to helping you through these, or any other challenges you might be facing

• General Counselling For Adults. There is no area that is off limits. Sometimes clients want to talk through experiences they have had in the past and how those experiences impact their present lives, and or their future plans. And some clients like to come regularly to debrief about the last fortnight and workshop the next fortnight, kind of like an emotional massage! Everyone’s experiences and perceptions are unique and that is why Catherine doesn’t specialise in any one area of counselling.

• Leadership Coaching/Counselling.  Catherine works with health professions, in both hospital based care and community health. She offers counselling, leadership coaching, debriefing and supervision to Health Professionals. This is one of Catherine’s areas of great interest. Over many years, Catherine has developed a unique style in this arena where she combines humanistic counselling, an understanding of team dynamics and the ability to tie these two areas together to provide support that meets the client where they need it. "Each session is really unique. Sometimes the client hasn’t realised that their stressors are coming from their personal lives, and so that is what we will talk about. The next one might be about showing leadership to team members, and an over flowing to-do-list. I go along with the client and be as directive or non-directive as that session requires.”

• Life Transitions and Career changes. Having transitioned from a career as a counsellor, to a career in real estate and back to counselling, Catherine is familiar with issues associated with career transitions and lifespan changes and she has helped clients through these challenges as well.

• Depression and anxiety. Catherine has worked with many clients who are experiencing depression and or anxiety and she believes it takes courage to talk about these experiences. Catherine firmly believes that everyone experiences these things individually and she takes the time to individualise strategies for her clients to support them in gaining insight into their feelings.

• Having spent more than six years working in palliative care in both hospital and in the community as a counsellor, Catherine has supported patients who are dying, families and carers of people with terminal illness as they approach their death. She has also then supported their loved ones in bereavement. She is not shocked or uncomfortable by death and dying and can provide support to people during this time.

• Reproductive Counselling. Catherine spent nine years working in reproductive counselling. This included reproductive choices, post miscarriage and post abortion counselling, navigating changing relationships due to pregnancyand parenting. She also supported women who needed to process their birth experience. And anything else that came up for clients at this very important time in people’s lives.

• Chronic illness. Catherine has worked with patients with chronic illness as well as their family members. This can be emotionally, socially and physically exhausting and often when a person seeks counselling for this, they can then spend time “away” from the illness with family and friends. Sometimes once someone has physically recovered from a chronic illness or from cancer, they need to process their experience and redefine what their life is like, post illness and Catherine can support clients through this transitional time.

• Relationships counselling.A lot of noise can develop in relationships sometimes, and yet couples can sometimes stop hearing each other. Improving communication, searching for underlying issues, building insight and acceptance and properly listening to each other can all be powerful tools in recreating respect within a relationship. Catherine holds a Level 1 in Gottman’s Couples Therapy and has helped many couples and families in times of need.
